    Free Walking Tour
    Sep 27th, 2010 by gurustu

Every day, 3 times a day, at 11am, 1pm and 3pm you can join a walking tour which costs absolutely nothing, except maybe a tip for the guide. The tours are run by Sandemans Tours, who are Europe’s leading walking tour company.

The walking tour takes about 3 hours, and you will see all of the main sights of the Old Town of Edinburgh.

    • Edinburgh Castle
    • St Giles’ Cathedral
    • The Royal Mile
    • Old & New Towns
    • Mercat Cross
    • Greyfriars Kirkyard (cemetery) and Greyfriars Bobby
    • Scott Monument
    • Princes Street Gardens
    • Grassmarket
    • Site of Witch Burnings
    • The original ‘Hogwarts’
    • William Wallace and the Stone of Destiny
    • National Museum
    • Edinburgh University
    • Covenanters’ Prison
    • Martyrs’ Memorial
    • The Mound
    • Tron Kirk
    • Burke and Hare, bodysnatchers
    • The real Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde
    • The Scottish Enlightenment

    …and more!

The tours are on everyday at 11 am, 1 pm and 3pm and start from the front of the Starbucks Café by the Tron Kirk on the High Street(Royal Mile). The tour ends in Princes Street Gardens, which is only minutes walk back home to the hostel.

The tours run in all weather and rain gear is available at the beginning of the tour.
No reservations are necessary. Just show up. Ask at reception for directions to the start point.

The tours are free, and there is no pressure, but it is always nice to give the guide a tip, as that is their only source of income, and their tours are so good, they seem to be able to get enough tips to survive.

    Age Restrictions
    Feb 2nd, 2010 by gurustu

We have no upper age limit, but we do not allow anyone under 18 years of age to stay with us. This is because we hold a bar license, which restricts us from allowing under 18’s in. This means there can be no exceptions at all.

    Feb 2nd, 2010 by gurustu

We provide you with all the internet you need. We have four computers you can use anytime, a couple of laptops you can borrow from the bar, or you can use the wifi throughout the building. We keep it open without any passwords to make it easy for you to log on. And its all free to use.

    Free Simple Breakfast
    Feb 2nd, 2010 by gurustu

In the morning you can enjoy a free simple breakfast, consisting of cereal & milk (Corn Flakes/Muesli/Weetabix), Toast & Spread (Vegemite, Jam or Chocolate), a refreshing Orange Drink and Coffee or Tea. It is served in the bar area between 6am and 12pm, so whether you are starting early to go on tour, or sleeping in you can always get your breakfast.

    A Bar
    Feb 2nd, 2010 by gurustu

Yes we have a bar, a real bar, with pool tables and everything. We sell beers, ciders, and spirits all for the cheapest prices we can manage. The bar is open until at least 1am most nights, sometimes 3am if there are lots of people around!

As well as alcoholic beverages we also sell soft drinks from Coke to the great Scottish drink Irn Bru.  We also have snacks available from a variety of chocolate bars to crisps so if you’re feeling peckish come down!

We also put on great social evenings in the bar such as a ‘Pub Quiz’, Pool competitions and live entertainment so ask at reception on your arrival of all the things going on in there during your stay!

We have 6 bed, 8 bed and 12 bed female dormitories available for anyone who prefers not to share with the boys.

    24 Hour Reception
    Jan 30th, 2010 by gurustu

For your safety, security and convenience, we have staff on 24 hours a day. They guard the front door, clean the hostel, and help you when you need it.
You can check in 24 hours a day, come and go as you please, and just have a chat.

    City Center Location
    Jan 30th, 2010 by gurustu

We are smack bang in the middle of the city center, in the New Town, which isn’t really that new at all. The main shopping street is outside our front door, and there are pubs and clubs everywhere. The Old Town is a 10 minute walk away, and indeed there isn’t much that you would want to do in Edinburgh that is more than 15 minutes walk from our front door.

    Key Card Access
    Jan 30th, 2010 by gurustu

We use key cards to access your rooms. These are better than normal keys because anyone can copy a normal key. The keycards expire at a certain time, so in the unlikely event that a copy is able to be made, it will only last a short time. You can even keep your keycards as a souvenir. You should always show your card to reception when you walk past, and you will need to use your keycard to enter the hostel after midnight.

    Jan 30th, 2010 by gurustu

In your room you will find lockers which you can use. You will need to supply your own padlock, or you can purchase one from us for £2.50.
The lockers are about 600hx305wx460d mm, so large suitcases might not fit, but they can always go under the bed.

    Luggage Storage
    Jan 30th, 2010 by gurustu

When you check out we have a luggage storage cupboard where you can leave your bags for the day while you explore Edinburgh a bit more.
